About the cast:
Johnny Depp was another unknown when he was cast; and initially went to accompany a friend so he could audition, yet eventually got the part of Glen. Before Johnny Depp got the role and before Jackie Earle Haley failed to win the role, other actors such as Charlie Sheen, John Cusack, Brad Pitt, Kiefer Sutherland, Nicolas Cage and C. Thomas Howell were considered.

About the story:
Wes Craven began writing A Nightmare on Elm Street's screenplay around 1981. He pitched it to several studios, but each one of them rejected it for different reasons. The first studio to show interest was Walt Disney Pictures, although they wanted Craven to tone down the content to make it suitable for children and pre-teens. Finally, the fledgling and independent New Line Cinema corporation—which had up to that point only distributed films, rather than making its own—gave the project the go-ahead.

Scream
"Deftly mixes irony, self-reference and wry social commentary with chills and blood spills"

About the film:
A masked killer begins murdering teenagers in a small town, and as the body count rises, one girl and her friends contemplate the "rules" of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.
The film is created by Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven.

About the cast:
Craven initially intended to hire talented but relatively unknown actors who had not yet had a "big break" in the film industry, as he had done with A Nightmare on Elm Street's Johnny Depp and Shocker's Peter Berg. However, the decision was made to cast actors who already had a notable body of work, marking a change from many previous horror films where casting current, popular actors was unheard of. Drew Barrymore initially approached the production herself after reading the script and was signed to play Sidney Prescott. However as time progressed, her schedule commitments meant she would be unable to remain in the leading role, so she volunteered to play the smaller role of Casey Becker.

About the story:
Scream was conceived under the title Scary Movie by screenwriter Kevin Williamson as an 18-page script inspired by a series of murders by the Gainesville Ripper that Williamson had seen in a news story and his own experience alone in a friends house after discovering an open window he had not previously noticed. The treatment covered what would become the opening scene of Scream.
